Jasper’s Story: Epilogue “My Pet Project”

It seems only fair to write this epilogue from my perspective rather than Jasper’s, so I have the chance to tell you what this adventure was like for me.  My association with Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet began as I started looking for volunteer opportunities when I took early retirement.  I also wanted to see if my husband, John, and I could handle the lifestyle change of having a dog.

My son and son-in-law were in the military when 9-11 changed everything.  They have both left the service and moved on with their lives, but I still feel strongly about supporting the military and their families.  So when I discovered the website for Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet, I was immediately attracted to its mission.

John was not as enthusiastic as I was about bringing a dog into our lives.  He likes to be able to pick up and go without the responsibility of pets.  Our cats are pretty self-sufficient; he rescued them for me, but the funny thing is, both the cats like John best. They must sense I am a DOG person!   So I filled out the application to be a foster family, with John’s approval.  We figured it would be a good test to see what it was like to have a dog at this stage of our lives.  While waiting for a foster pet match, I became involved in the organization on the State level and now I’m even part of the National Support team.  Turns out Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet was a really good match for me as a volunteer organization.

Jasper and Carol

The foster experience is now over and my emotions are bittersweet.  On the one hand, I am so happy that we made it to “Mission Accomplished;” there is no doubt in my mind that Holly and Jasper belong together and I wish them well on their new adventures – post deployment.  On the other hand, I’m expecting our house to feel very “empty” for awhile.  Jasper has permeated our home and our lives with “the mission” for 8 months.  We threw ourselves into loving and caring for someone else’s dog.  Animal lover that I am, I was fully aware I could get “too attached.”  Mr. John, on the other hand, was always giving me the reality check.  YES, we will miss him, but now that Jasper has been reunited with his mom, I can look back at this adventure and see all of it.  The good and …..well, let’s just say, the more challenging parts.

Fostering Jasper has been a most memorable experience.  Besides enjoying the unconditional love of a sweet natured dog, the most satisfying part of this adventure was the privilege of supporting our military in a real and tangible way.  Many people seemed surprised that I would take on such a long term responsibility for a stranger.  But the way I looked at it, the military and their families are always making sacrifices for me.  I wanted to give back in some way to support them.  If I was willing to help, only if it was “convenient” for me, then that really wasn’t much of an effort on my part.  Think how hard it must have been for Jasper’s mom to just hand over his leash to a stranger.  That’s pretty much what I was to her at the time.  We have since had time to communicate and build a trusting relationship, and I feel somewhat like I adopted her as much as I adopted Jasper.  It felt good to be patriotic, to send mail and care packages, to put up the flag with Jasper every day, and to tie a yellow ribbon on the oak tree for Holly.

But I think what surprised me most was the unbelievably fun opportunity I had to speak for Jasper in his Blog and on his Facebook page.  It was almost therapeutic to bring his sweet and crazy personality to so many new friends through Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet.   I realized after the first week with Jasper, that my personal Facebook page would be taken over with “Jasper” posts if I wasn’t careful.  The fact that other foster pets had “community” pages seemed like a good idea.  Holly could get her fill of Jasper news long distance, and I wouldn’t subject my personal friends and family to Jasper overload.  Jasper’s FB page would be good publicity for Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet and bring a community of foster families closer together.  The comments and love from fans in all corners of the globe was like an invisible support system.  Documenting our foster experience for Holly with daily photographs and stories was a new hobby for me and it brought smiles to many fans besides Jasper’s mom. I even got back into the swing of Scrapbooking because I had such an adorable subject.  I can’t tell you how much I will miss interacting with all of Jasper’s loyal fans on Facebook. Thank you, all, for sending your love to Jasper.

Another thing on the plus side of this experience was that Jasper brought a great health benefit to our home.  I never imagined we could walk so much!  In the seven months he lived with us I conservatively estimate we walked over 600 miles together. We’re in much better shape now than we were 8 months ago.  Jasper, you have a great career ahead of you as a personal trainer!

But I do have to admit, it was not always easy.  Much like having a toddler in the family, the responsibility was constant, which was a big adjustment for this normally unfettered retired couple with an empty nest and two cats.   Jasper’s energy and desire to run was a challenge for retired folks.  His intense prey drive, in our woodsy, critter-filled neighborhood, kept us always on high alert.  We never did reach détente with the family cats.  Pumpkin and Alley moved to the lower level of our house and a baby gate helped protect them during the day time hours.  They are ready to move back upstairs and take back their home and enjoy the porch this fall.  MOL!

As we expected there will be a number of things to repair, replace and clean now that Jasper has gone home.  I imagine I’ll clean up the “nose art” on all the windows pretty quickly, but I think the scratches in the hardwood and some on the screens will be reminders of Jasper for as long as we live in this house.  I know that his little white Dalmatian hairs will keep showing up on things for months, but I will just smile and silently send him love whenever they do. I won’t step on dog toys in the night, or have them dropped in my lap when I sit at the computer, and I won’t have to use the lint brush on my clothes when I’m going out. But I’m going to miss the Jasper kisses, the feel of his velvet soft fur, the constant shadow following me around the house, the unexpected laughter he could create, the snuggling on the couch in the evening and most of all, the sight of him running and leaping through the yard.  I’ll miss taking his picture constantly and thinking of the next adventure we could have with Jasper!

There is no doubt the positives far outweigh the negatives.  We have adopted Jasper and his mom as family members and plan to stay in touch and visit each other.  I may not be Jasper’s foster mom any more, but I can always be “grandma” to a granddog!

When talking to others about my fostering experience many people have told me they could never do it, because they wouldn’t be able to give the pet back.  To all of them, I say, you can do it, if you always remember the mission and don’t forget the pet has another family.  I talked to Jasper, every day about his mom coming home soon, and I know I said it out loud to remind myself, more than I did it for Jasper’s benefit. Focus on the service member not just the pet.  We love Jasper, but we fostered him for Holly.

And the rest of the story is that John and I found out maybe we could adjust to having a dog.  We both recognized how much they enrich your life and I had to admit that John was, by far, the better pack leader.  I’ll try to follow his good example next time.  But we do plan to take a couple trips first, and when we finally do rescue a “forever furry family member” it will be one who can leave the squirrels alone and not chase the cats!   And as Jasper would say…. Bark Out Loud (BOL)!

Jasper’s Story: The Final Chapter

Jasper and Holly (MSM)

Wow!   What a morning!  I could tell something was up around the house.  Carol and Mr. John were getting ready for something, I just didn’t realize what.  We had some visitors from the newspaper come to the house and I was still sniffing and meeting them when all of a sudden Carol took me out in the yard, holding me by my collar.  The next thing I know Mr. John comes walking around the garage with a lady and when she called my name, I knew it was my mom, Holly.  She finally came back!  I got so excited!!!!  I jumped and kissed and ran circles in the yard.  It was a really happy day for me.  After many jumps, kisses, smiles, laughs and posing for pictures, we all went inside.  The newspaper lady talked to Carol and my mom for a few minutes and then I finally had my two moms and Mr. John all to myself.  Carol says the local paper is going to write a story about me and Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet.  We went out to the oak tree and took down the yellow ribbon.  Carol wanted to give it to my mom as a souvenir. Then all my people finally relaxed and things settled down for awhile. They were just talking and laughing, looking at pictures and eating and talking some more.  I started to get sleepy and wanted to take a nap in the sun. But I stayed close to mom’s feet. I didn’t want her to go away again.  After a nice visit, everyone started gathering up all my toys and bowls, and my blankets and my bed.  I mean all my stuff.  I guess that means I won’t be living with Carol and Mr. John anymore.  I’m going home

Jasper, Holly (MSM) and Carol (Foster Mom)

with my mom! Mom told Carol and Mr. John that we could all get together and visit soon.  I sure hope so, because I would love to come back and see them whenever I can.  I sure had fun living with Carol and Mr. John but I’m sooooooo happy my mom came back for me.  I jumped right in the car and it’s off to a new adventure with my mom.

Love to all my Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet friends and love to Carol and Mr. John.

Jasper’s Story: Part 6

Wishing everyone a very Happy 4th of July!!   My mom is still serving our country and I know she would be so happy if she could be here to see the fireworks, watch the parade, and have a fun picnic with her family and friends.  But the brave people who serve overseas for our military don’t always get home for the holidays.   I do think my mom will be coming home sometime soon. While my mom is away, I am lucky to be a Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet foster dog. My foster mom, Carol, said I should get one more regular blog written and then I will save my very last blog for the story of my reunion with mom.  Oh, I can hardly wait!  I’m starting my happy dog dance just thinking about it.

It sure has been hot around here lately.  We still get good long morning walks in before the sun gets very hot, but sometimes, it’s so hot later, that we don’t get an evening walk. I do have a little swimming pool to play in, but it’s more fun when one of the grandkids is here to play with me in the water. Sometimes, Mr. John just splashes the water on me.  Carol has been using the hose to water all of her special plants because it has not rained in weeks.  If I get in the way of the hose, I get sprinkled and that sure feels good.  I’m still chasing squirrels and chipmunks in the yard whenever I get a chance.  In my last blog I told you how the raccoons got Mrs. Bluebird in her house!  Well, Mr. Bluebird found another lady bird and we had a second round bluebird eggs and this time the eggs have hatched! Mr. and Mrs. BB are busy feeding the babies until they are big enough to fly away, so Carol makes sure that I give them space.

My most exciting adventure in the last few weeks, was getting to climb up in the Bedford Fire Department Fire Truck.  The Fire Truck was at the library for a special fun day.  People (and dogs) were welcome to tour the truck and talk to the firemen.  I had a great time wondering around and letting both big and little people pet me.  The Fire Captain even wanted to meet me and see me get on his truck.  I was hoping they would have a fire dog, like me, and we could get our picture taken together.  But it turns out they don’t have a fire dog. That’s when Mr. John tried to get me a job.  The Capt. said they don’t have the budget for a fire dog, whatever that means.   The Police Department was at the library, too, with their DARE car.  I got my picture taken by the car and then Mr. John asked the police officer if they were hiring K-9s.  I don’t know why Mr. John was trying so hard to find me a job.  He doesn’t have a job, why should I?

I hope you all have fun with picnics, parades and swimming fun this 4th of July. Maybe you’ll even see some fireworks!  Take time to remember all the service men and women, like my mom, who protect all of us.  I’m wearing my flag bandana to say “Happy Birthday, America!!”

Until next time…Happy Tails to you!

Jasper’s Story: Part 5

Hello, everyone!  It’s time for another Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pet blog.  So much has happened since my last story.  With the weather being so warm, I spend a lot of time outdoors with my foster mom and dad, Carol and Mr. John.  Having so much fun makes the days and weeks go by faster and faster.  I know it won’t be that much longer until my mom comes home, at least, that’s what Carol tells me.

Since my last story, I’ve been on several new adventures.  One is Hoosier Doggie Daycare!  Carol found this place to take me to visit during the day, where there are lots of other dogs to play with, and I mean all kinds of dogs! There are big ones, little ones, slow ones, fast ones, even puppies and old dogs.  Todd and Amy are the pack leaders and they helped me join the pack.  The first time I went there, it was a practice day.  I had to show them I could get along. So I met the dogs one at a time, until I got used to the whole pack.  The big dogs play in one yard and the little dogs are in a different yard.  I got to meet both the big and the little dogs. Well, I was awfully excited, since I don’t get to play with any other dogs at my foster home.  I did have to learn some new manners, though.  Todd said it’s not nice to hump on other dogs. BOL! So, I’m learning not to do that.  On hot days we have a little swimming pool to play in. The water is fun and it keeps you cool, but there’s really not enough room for us all to be in the pool at once, so we have to take turns. I’ve been to doggie daycare four times and now I know exactly where I am when Carol pulls in the parking lot.  It’s fun to be around other dogs, but I sure am “dog tired” when Carol brings me home.  I usually fall asleep in the car on the way home and then go to bed early.

Carol doesn’t like it when I play in the dirt, but she’s been playing in the dirt around her house almost every day.  And when she doesn’t play in the dirt, she is usually spraying water from the hose onto the dirt.  She plants flowers and other green things and she doesn’t want me walking in her gardens. Mr. John put a fence around her garden, so it keeps me and the deer out. Carol feeds the birds, and Mr. John put up houses for the birds to live in.  They told me to stay away from one of the birdhouses on a pole.  I guess it was special because it was for BLUEbirds.  They were very happy when Mr. Bluebird got a girlfriend. Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird made a nest in the house and then she laid some eggs.  They kept calling me away from the house, so I wouldn’t scare them.  It was like there was a big “DO NOT DISTURB” sign out.  Well, I left them alone alright, but I can’t say the same for Mr. Raccoon. The other night there was quite a ruckus about 2 am and when the sun came up that morning, Mr. John found out that a Mr. Raccoon had managed to climb the pole, reach in the box and snatch momma bluebird.  Nothing left but feathers.  Believe me, it wasn’t a pretty sight. Well, I’m just glad I wasn’t the one who ate the bluebird, because both Carol and Mr. John were pretty upset.  I think Mr. John is planning to find a way to trap that old raccoon.  I think he just likes to hunt all kinds of critters.  And that is one thing we have in common – hunting critters!

Most of my adventures have been nothing but FUN, but I do have to confess, I got myself in a little trouble recently.  Mr. John and Carol have a VERY, VERY big yard, but none of it has a fence, so they want me to stay on the grassy parts.  Sometimes the woods look like fun and if I see a squirrel, I want to chase him.  Well, the other day, I was just too excited chasing a critter, that when Carol called me back, I didn’t stop running.  I ended up in the neighbor’s yard and they brought me back home, so Carol said I was GROUNDED.  Luckily that didn’t last too long.  I’m trying to behave, but mostly I think Carol has learned not to trust me so much.

OK, so, I saved the best for last. Now I just have to tell you about my VERY BEST adventure yet.  We went boating and fishing on a really big lake!!  You know I like to go just about anywhere, but Carol and Mr. John weren’t sure how I would like being on a boat out in the middle of a lake, but they said I should try it, at least once, and I’m sure glad I did!  I think what worried them the most was that I might jump out of the boat.  The water in that big lake is still pretty cold and I don’t think they wanted to jump in after me. BOL!  Well, I wasn’t afraid of the boat or the water.  I jumped aboard at the dock and it didn’t bother me at all when Mr. John started the engine.  Noises don’t scare me.  We started out going pretty slow but after awhile, Mr. John was driving faster and it was just like sticking your head out the car window.  The wind was blowing in your face and you could smell all kinds of good smells in the air. I loved it! I was on a leash and Carol held onto it, to be sure I didn’t do anything stupid. But it didn’t take long for me to prove to them that I was going to be a good boat dog! Mr. John even let me see what it was like to drive the boat.  I paced around the boat from port to starboard and bow to stern, looking out at the water and sniffing the air. We saw some turtles and a big bluebird that Carol called a heron. When we came close to the shore Mr. John slowed the boat down almost to a stop.  He got this long stick he stored in the front of the boat and he started throwing a string in the water.  I was fascinated. I wasn’t sure what he was doing, but it didn’t take me long to find out.  He was catching fish!  Man, oh, man, was that cool.  He would bring the string back and there would be a little fish hooked on it. Mr. John showed them to me and let me smell them.  Critters!!  There were critters in all that water!   Now, you have my attention!!  Since the fish he caught were pretty little, he kept taking them off the hook and throwing them back in the water. I really wanted him to throw one to me or find a way to chase them in the water.  Mr. John did drop one fish in the boat and it flopped around, I rushed for it and was able to pick it up in my mouth.  Carol screamed, “NO, NO, leave it, Jasper,” so I dropped it and she picked it up and threw it in the water.  I wish she would have let me play with it.  Now I know why Mr. John likes to go fishing.  It was so much fun; I hope he takes me out on the boat again.  I love fishing!

I guess that’s it for now.  I’m not sure when my mom will be back, but Carol says I will probably have time for a couple more blogs before we are reunited. So stay tuned.

Happy Tails until next time!

Jasper’s Story: Part 4

Howdy friends!  My tail is waggin’ and I have lots of stories to tell you about my life as a foster dog with Guardian Angels for Soldiers Pet since my last entry.

Since I’ve settled in my foster home with Carol and Mr. John about 4 months ago, we have gotten into a family routine.  Most of our days are pretty predictable.  I get good long walks with Carol (morning and evening) and some squirrel chasing time in the yard, a sneak peak at a cat or two and lots of treats.  I have my own room to sleep in at night and I let Carol use it in the daytime to get on the computer.  Sometimes when she’s “working” I’d rather we just play, so to get her attention, I bring her my toys and lay them in her lap.  First I bring my rope toy, then my ball, and if I can find it, my Nylabone chew toy.  That chew toy is heavy and makes a lot of noise when I drop it on the hardwood floor.  If that doesn’t work I put my front paws on her lap and lay my chin on the keyboard.  Now that gets her attention, because it messes up her typing.  If she pushes me away and keeps typing then I put my paws on the keyboard and start my own typing.  Then finally Carol will either stop and play with me or take me outside. There’s only been a couple times when she sent me to my bed to wait.

Carol and Mr. John know I am a Dalmatian, but I think sometimes my behavior surprises them.  I love to run circles in the yard, like a Greyhound on a race track.  I love to hunt and track all kinds of critters, like a beagle.  I think I would love to be a hunting dog, a bloodhound, or bird dog.  I have my pointer pose perfected and I can hold still for a long time.  Carol and Mr. John let me do all kinds of different things to keep all the dogs inside of me entertained. The beagle in me was glad I got to go on the egg hunt with the grandkids over Easter.  Now that’s a good story.

Have you ever heard the story of Goldilocks?  Carol reads that story to Becca sometimes.  Well, I felt like the story of the egg hunt was like the Goldilocks story and I was Goldilocks!!  First, let me tell you about the grandkids.  Jake is the oldest and biggest, next is Wes and Becca is the youngest, she’s three.  When the egg hunt started, I was ready to go and use my nose to find eggs.  I started out with Jake, but he was just way too fast.  He rushed by and left me in the dust.  I could tell little Becca needed some help, so I went to see what I could do.  Well, she was just too slow, so I left her with Mr. John and her momma and then I went to find Wes.  Well, finally it was just right.  Wes and I were the perfect team.  Not too fast and not too slow.  Wes followed right with me and picked up all the eggs I could sniff out.  He was just right!!  Boy was that fun.  Wes gave me lots of doggie treats for helping.

My latest adventure with Carol and Mr. John was to see if I really had what it takes to be a fire dog.  You know how you always see Dalmatians sitting at the fire station or riding on one of those big red trucks?  Well, that’s what I was expecting when Carol said, “Let’s go see if you can be a fire dog!”  Turns out she had a completely different idea.  We went to a State Forest nearby and started out walking a trail.  I love trails in the woods.  We have hiked before and it’s always fun.  After a short bit of hiking, we came to a big tower and Carol said, “Let’s go see if you can spot any fires from the fire tower!”  She had me on my leash and started up some stairs.  Well, I followed right along.  Up, up, up we went.  The stairs were the kind where you can see right through them when you are going up.  It didn’t bother me much at first, because you would go up about 7 or 8 steps and then there was a landing you could walk around.  Then it was up, up, up some more steps.  I started looking over the railing and figured out we were getting up higher and higher.  I don’t think I’ve ever been that high off the ground.  I could look right in the tree branches.  I realized I was up in squirrel country.  This is where they went to get away from me!!!  After awhile the steps got smaller and the wind started blowing.  I wasn’t sure I really wanted to go up any more, but Carol kept urging me up.  Mr. John was way up ahead of us and I heard him calling me.

The wind was blowing so hard Carol just stopped on one of the platforms and waited with me for it to stop.  We finally got to the top where Mr. John was waiting and he gave me an “Atta boy!” for conquering the tower.  There was a room up top with windows all around.  At home Carol doesn’t like me to put my feet up on the window, but she called me up so I could see out.  Boy, oh boy, we were above the trees now.  I could see for miles and miles.  Carol asked me if I could see any Fires anywhere.  I didn’t even see smoke!

As much of an adventure as it was to get up, I have to say that it was nothing compared to coming down.  Mr. John went down first and left me with Carol.  She had a hard time getting me to make that first step down off the platform.  I considered just staying at the top FOREVER.  Carol told me once I got started it would be OK.  I think for a minute she thought she was going to have to carry me down.  Now that would have been an accident waiting to happen. Could you just see Carol holding a 50 lbs Dalmatian in her arms, lose her footing and slide down the stairs on her backside?  So, I told myself I could do it and down we went.  Down, down, down, down, down, step after step after step. I liked to stop on the platforms, but Carol kept urging me down.  When we made it back on solid ground, Carol and Mr. John said I did an awesome job and they were proud of me!!  I guess I am a fire dog after all.

I’m having fun with Carol and Mr. John but I do miss my mom.  Carol says we don’t know for sure when she will be home, butwe can start looking forward to a happy reunion.  Now that the weather is warmer and the days are longer, Carol and I have added a new routine to our day.  First thing in the morning when I go outside, Carol and I walk the flag out to the stand at the end of the driveway and every night before I go to bed, we bring the flag back inside.   Behind the flag on a big tree is a giant yellow ribbon.  Carol says we put it there to remember my momma and that it will stay there until she comes home to get me.  I like putting up the flag and looking at momma’s yellow ribbon.  I love you mom and I am so very proud of you.  Stay Safe!

Happy Tails, until next time!
